Siding Built for Sehome's Bay-Adjacent Climate

Sehome sits close enough to Bellingham Bay that homes here deal with a steady mix of salt-tinged air, wind-driven rain, and long stretches of gray, damp weather that can run from fall clear through spring. Add in the tree cover common to Whatcom County neighborhoods and you get a climate that's genuinely hard on exterior building materials. Siding, trim, and roofing here don't just get wet — they stay wet, cycle through freeze-thaw swings, and sit under shade that keeps moisture around longer than it would on a more exposed, sun-baked lot.

That combination is exactly why we standardized on James Hardie fiber cement siding for every home we side, in Sehome and across the rest of Bellingham. It's not a marketing decision — it's a materials decision based on what actually holds up in this environment.

What the Local Climate Does to a Home's Exterior

A few things show up again and again on older Sehome homes and on newer builds that weren't finished with climate-appropriate materials:

  • Moss and algae growth — shaded, north-facing walls and anything under tree canopy stay damp long enough for moss and mildew to take hold, especially on wood-based or textured siding surfaces.
  • Salt-air corrosion — proximity to the bay means airborne salt settles on exterior surfaces and fasteners, which accelerates wear on materials and hardware that aren't rated for it.
  • Paint and caulk failure — constant damp-dry cycling stresses paint film and caulked joints, leading to cracking, peeling, and the gaps that let water behind the siding in the first place.
  • Wood rot at vulnerable points — butt joints, corner trim, and anywhere water can pool are the first places wood-based products start to fail.

None of this is unique to any one house — it's just what happens to exterior materials in a marine, tree-covered climate over enough winters.

Why We Only Install James Hardie

We get asked why we don't offer vinyl, LP SmartSide, or other fiber cement brands. The honest answer is that we've made a professional call to standardize on one product system rather than spread ourselves across several — and James Hardie is the one we trust for this climate.

Hardie's fiber cement is non-combustible, doesn't swell or delaminate from moisture exposure the way wood-based composite products can if a seam or cut edge is compromised, and it's engineered in specific formulations (their HZ5 product line) for wetter Pacific Northwest conditions. The factory-applied ColorPlus finish is baked on under controlled conditions, which holds color and resists the peeling and fading that field-applied paint jobs are more prone to out here. It also comes with a strong transferable warranty, which matters to future buyers if you ever sell.

None of that means other products are junk — vinyl is inexpensive and low-maintenance in mild climates, and engineered wood siding has real fans. But given what Sehome's air and rainfall do to a home over 15, 20, 30 years, we don't think those trade-offs make sense here, so we don't install them.

Beyond Siding: Roofing, Windows, and Decks

Siding is only one piece of a home's exterior envelope, and the same climate factors that wear down siding also affect the roof, windows, and any outdoor deck or living space. We handle all four:

  • Roofing — a roof under Sehome's tree cover needs proper ventilation and moss-resistant detailing, not just new shingles.
  • Windows — old or poorly sealed windows are one of the most common paths for moisture and drafts into a home; replacement windows paired with new siding let us properly flash and seal the whole opening at once.
  • Decks — outdoor structures take the most direct hit from rain and moss in this climate, and building or repairing them right means materials and drainage details suited to year-round Pacific Northwest wet weather.

Because we do all four, we can look at a Sehome home as one system — siding, roof, windows, and deck all need to shed water the same way and work together, not fight each other.

Why a Local Crew Matters

A crew that works Whatcom County day in and day out knows how Sehome's microclimate differs from, say, a drier inland neighborhood or a more exposed waterfront lot. That shows up in small but important decisions: how much clearance to leave for drainage behind siding, where extra flashing attention is worth it, and which details actually matter versus which are just upsells. It also means we're a short drive away if a warranty question or maintenance concern ever comes up — not a crew that did one job in the area and moved on.

Siding installed to spec, with correct water management and flashing details, is what actually determines how a home performs over the next few decades — the product matters, but the installation matters just as much.
